The Mission Building:

The Members and Friends of The Mission Arts Club have made it possible for artists with no or very limited resources to develop their art  in parts of the Old Eton Mission building by transforming, over a period of two years, a once abandoned and forgotten space into artists studios, space for workshops, art events and an arts platform.

The building occupied by The Mission Arts Club was originally a snooker club. When the snooker club moved out in the late seventies, the building was left abandoned and suffered serious damage and ruin. Thanks to The Mission Arts Club and the ongoing support of St Mary's of Eton Church the building is now again in a useable state.

Community and Access

Over the last two years the Mission Arts Club has open its doors to all kinds of different people without prejudice to race, social background, disabilities, gender or religious believe. The people who used the facilities of the Mission Arts Club included people with mental health problems (Core Arts Members), homeless people (Vision Impossible at Thames Reach members), Children from the church community (Open day workshop), artists in low income jobs and other excluded members of the local community.

The Mission Arts Club's projects provide a service for the local community in which has so far not been available if Hackney Wick. We believe that the response to the activities we have offered in the last two years has demonstrated the need for this service.

The age range of people who benefited from the Mission Arts Club's activities is from 10 (children workshops) to 60 years old.

The services offered by the Mission Arts Club complement Hackney Council's efforts to promote young artists, in particular by providing young artists with a space where they can exhibit their art and by offering workshops which allow young artists to develop their skills.

The majority of our members are resident in the London Borough of Hackney and similarly the majority of the people who benefit from our activities are resident in the London Borough of Hackney.

In addition, the Mission Arts Club has managed to turn the once abandoned and derelict Old Eton Mission building into a well maintained building and has thereby contributed to Hackney Council's efforts to improve the general appearance of the borough.
